Polestar is expanding the Polestar 4 into a two-model family. The existing low-roof model becomes the Polestar 4 Coupé, while a taller and more practical Polestar 4 SUV will be fully revealed—and opened for ordering—on 2 September 2026.

The crucial point: Polestar has announced the new SUV, but has not yet published its complete specifications, interior pictures or Swedish pricing.

Polestar says the SUV will combine the Coupé’s design and performance with greater versatility and more flexible luggage space. Polestar’s announcement

What will make it different?

The present Polestar 4 is an unusually low SUV-coupé with no conventional rear window. Instead, a roof-mounted camera sends a live image to the digital rear-view mirror.

The new SUV appears to adopt:

  • A taller and squarer rear body
  • A less dramatically sloping roof
  • More usable luggage space
  • Better vertical room for bulky items
  • Improved rear headroom
  • A conventional rear window

That final point is strongly suggested by Polestar’s teaser image and photographed prototypes, but Polestar has not yet explicitly confirmed it in the technical specifications.

The result should be closer to an electric performance estate/SUV than a traditional coupé. Think BMW iX3, Mercedes GLC EQ and Volvo EX60 competitor, but with a lower, sportier Polestar character.

Battery, range and charging

Polestar has confirmed that the SUV retains a 400-volt architecture, rather than receiving the new 800-volt technology used by the upgraded Polestar 3.

Confirmed:

  • Up to 630 km WLTP for the Rear motor
  • Up to 544 hp for the Dual motor
  • 400-volt electrical architecture

Not yet confirmed:

  • Battery’s gross and usable capacities
  • Maximum DC charging power
  • Official 10–80% charging time
  • AC charging capacity
  • Energy consumption for each version

The Coupé currently uses a 100 kWh-class battery, charges at up to 200 kW DC and takes approximately 30 minutes from 10–80%. Similar numbers are likely for the SUV, but should not be treated as official until 2 September.

This is the SUV’s most obvious technical weakness: 200 kW and roughly 30 minutes are adequate, but new 800-volt competitors can offer 270–350 kW and complete the same charging session in approximately 20–22 minutes.

Expected performance

If the SUV retains the Coupé’s motors, we can expect something close to:

VersionDriven wheelsPowerLikely character
Rear motorRWDAround 200 kW/272 hpBest range and lowest price
Dual motorAWDUp to 400 kW/544 hpVery rapid performance
Dual motor PerformanceAWDUp to 400 kW/544 hpChassis, brake and wheel upgrades

The current Coupé Dual motor reaches 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds. The SUV may be slightly slower because of its taller body and potentially greater weight, although Polestar has not published an acceleration figure.

Chassis and driving experience

Both the new SUV and latest Coupé receive retuned chassis components. Polestar says the changes are intended to strengthen driving dynamics while delivering a refined experience.

This could address one of the existing Polestar 4’s most common criticisms: depending on wheel size and specification, the Coupé can feel quite firm and occasionally unsettled over poor surfaces.

The SUV is therefore expected to offer:

  • Revised springs and dampers
  • More composed ride quality
  • Retained rear-biased handling
  • A lower and sportier driving position than a conventional large SUV
  • Possible adaptive dampers on higher specifications

Exact suspension details remain unconfirmed.

Interior and technology

The SUV should carry over much of the Coupé’s cabin and software:

  • 15.4-inch landscape centre screen
  • Android Automotive OS
  • Google Maps and Google Assistant/Gemini integration
  • Head-up display
  • Digital driver display
  • Over-the-air software updates
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Multiple driver-assistance cameras and sensors
  • Polestar’s minimalist interior design
  • Rear climate and media control display
  • Optional reclining rear seats and premium Nappa upholstery

The more upright roof should make the luggage compartment substantially more useful, even if passenger space in the existing Coupé is already very good.

Polestar has not yet revealed the SUV’s:

  • Boot capacity
  • Frunk capacity
  • Rear-seat folding arrangement
  • Interior trim combinations
  • Infotainment processor
  • Standard and optional equipment packages

Towing and family practicality

The present Dual motor Coupé can tow a meaningful load, so a tow bar is highly likely for the SUV. However, its final braked towing capacity has not been announced.

The new body should be considerably better suited to:

  • Dogs
  • Prams
  • Large suitcases
  • Roof boxes
  • Bikes and outdoor equipment
  • Customers uncomfortable with a camera-only rear-view mirror

Roof-load capacity and whether conventional roof rails will be offered remain unknown.

Production

The new Polestar 4 SUV will be produced in Busan, South Korea. This differs from the original China-built Polestar 4 and is strategically important for Polestar’s international production footprint.

European and Swedish availability is expected, since Polestar says it will be offered in a majority of its markets. First customer deliveries have not been formally dated, but late 2026 or early 2027 appears plausible.

Price

Swedish pricing will be revealed on or after 2 September.

For context, the current Polestar 4 Coupé starts at SEK 619,000 in Sweden. It offers up to 620 km WLTP, 200 kW DC charging and up to 400 kW of power. Current Swedish Polestar 4 Coupé

My estimate—not official—is that the SUV will start slightly above the corresponding Coupé, probably somewhere around SEK 640,000–680,000, depending on standard equipment.

Potential strengths

  • Distinctive design without sacrificing as much practicality
  • Excellent rear-seat accommodation
  • Up to 630 km WLTP
  • Very strong Dual motor performance
  • More conventional visibility
  • High-quality, minimalist interior
  • Google-based infotainment
  • Korean production
  • Likely one of the sportier electric family SUVs

Potential weaknesses

  • Still based on a 400-volt platform
  • Charging may remain limited to around 200 kW
  • Likely expensive once desirable packages are added
  • Touchscreen-heavy controls
  • Large exterior dimensions
  • Big wheels may compromise comfort and efficiency
  • Price, boot capacity and delivery timing remain unknown

EV-erything verdict

The new Polestar 4 SUV may be the version the Polestar 4 should always have offered. It retains the striking design, spacious cabin and potentially explosive performance of the Coupé, while addressing the two biggest objections: limited rear visibility and a less versatile luggage compartment.

However, buyers should wait for three numbers on 2 September: price, luggage capacity and charging time. If charging remains capped at 200 kW while rivals move to 800 volts, the Polestar’s design and driving experience will need to compensate for a clear long-distance disadvantage.

For now, the Rear motor looks likely to be the intelligent range-and-value choice. The Dual motor will be the emotional choice—and one of the fastest family SUVs in its class.
