Test this before bying a Tesla

What YOU can check directly in the
Tesla driver display (Model 3 / Model Y)

1. Battery & Range

✔ Displayed rated range

  • Go to Controls → Charging
  • Check the rated range at the current state of charge (best if 90% or 100%).

✔ Daily charge limit history (current setting)

  • Still under Controls → Charging
  • See what the charge limit is set to.
    • LR/Performance: usually 70–80% (good sign)
    • LFP (RWD): often 100% (normal)

✔ Current battery temperature warnings

  • Any warnings will appear on screen (cold battery, limited regen, etc.)

2. Software & Vehicle Info

Autopilot / EAP / FSD status

  • Go to Controls → Autopilot
  • See which features are active and included:
    • Autopilot (basic)
    • Enhanced Autopilot
    • Full Self-Driving Capability

Software version

  • Go to Controls → Software
  • Shows:
    • Software version
    • Whether updates are available
    • Update channel (Standard / Advanced)

Vehicle information (hidden details)

  • In Controls → Software → Additional Vehicle Information
    You can see:
  • Hardware version (FSD computer / HW3 / HW4)
  • Whether premium connectivity is included
  • Type of audio system
  • Motor configuration
  • WiFi/Bluetooth hardware
  • Heated accessories (seats, steering wheel, etc.)

3. Connectivity

Premium Connectivity status

  • Visible under Controls → Software
  • Says:
    • “Premium Connectivity: Active”
    • or “Expires on…”
    • or “Not active”

4. Cameras & Sensors

All cameras working?

  • Activate the rear/side camera view:
    • Swipe up in the bottom bar OR
    • Press the camera icon
  • Check if:
    • Rear camera is clear
    • Side cameras are clear
    • No areas are black/blocked
    • No warnings (“camera unavailable” etc.)

Parking sensors & visualisation

  • Put the car in Drive and Reverse
  • Check if:
    • Parking distance visualization works
    • No sensor errors are shown

5. Charging system

AC charging limit

  • Under Controls → Charging
  • Check if AC charging speed (kW) has any warnings or limits.

DC fast charging info (when plugged in)

If you connect to a charger while inspecting:

  • The screen shows:
    • Charging power (kW)
    • Charging curve behaviour
    • Estimated time remaining
    • Battery temperature warnings

6. Drive & Safety

Regenerative braking

  • Go to Controls → Pedals & Steering:
    • “Regenerative Braking: Standard / Low”
    • “Creep / Hold / Roll” mode
  • Make sure no regen-limited warnings aside from normal cold battery.

Safety & security alerts

  • Go to Controls → Service → Alerts
  • Check for:
    • Autopilot calibration issues
    • Camera blocked
    • Sensor errors
    • Traction control faults
    • Battery/charging alerts
    • HVAC issues

7. Interior/Exterior Systems

Lights, indicators, mirrors

  • All can be tested inside the car from Controls → Lights/Locks
  • Check:
    • Headlights
    • Indicators
    • Fog lights
    • Mirror fold/unfold
    • Window calibration alerts

Wipers

  • Test via Controls → Wipers
  • Check for:
    • Full speed works
    • Auto mode works
    • No skipping or error messages

8. HVAC / Heat Pump (Model 3/Y)

Cabin heating / cooling

  • Go to Climate panel
  • Test:
    • Heating
    • AC
    • Fan levels
    • Defrost
  • Check for airflow inconsistencies or HVAC warnings.

9. Keyless & Locking

Keys shown in display

  • Go to Controls → Locks
  • Check:
    • Phone keys listed
    • Key cards listed
    • No “Key not detected” errors
