Quick answer – best “bang for the buck” EVs for towing in Nordics/Europe
For 1.3–1.6-ton caravans / trailers
- Tesla Model Y (RWD / “Premium” / Long Range)
1,600 kg towing, long WLTP range, very strong fast-charging network, aggressive pricing from around 500,000 SEK. - Hyundai Ioniq 5 Long Range AWD
1,600 kg towing, 800-V system with very fast charging, often good campaign/lease offers around 550–650,000 SEK. - Kia EV6 Long Range AWD
1,800 kg towing (class-leading in this size), 800-V system, strong range; real-world deals roughly 580–710,000 SEK.
If you need maximum towing capacity
- Kia EV9 (RWD / AWD)
2,500 kg rated towing on all versions, 800-V, 7-seater, from about 690,000 SEK in Sweden – extremely good “kg per SEK” if you actually use the 2.5-ton capacity.
Space & comfort value
- Škoda Enyaq 85x
1,200 kg towing, big, quiet and efficient, long range, from ~580–670,000 SEK; not the highest towing rating, but very family-friendly.
Quick comparison (Nordic / EU spec, late 2025, approximate)
| Model (EV) | Max tow (braked) | WLTP range (similar trim) | DC fast charging (10–80 %) | Approx price in Sweden (from) | Why it’s good value |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tesla Model Y (RWD / Premium / Long Range) | 1,600 kg | Around 568 km WLTP for Long Range | Up to 250 kW, roughly 10–80 % in ~25 min | From ~500,000 SEK (Standard), more for Premium RWD / LR | 1,600 kg towing + long range + Supercharger network at a relatively low purchase price. |
| Hyundai Ioniq 5 Long Range AWD | 1,600 kg | Up to ~570 km WLTP (new larger-battery RWD; AWD a bit lower) | 800-V, up to ~230 kW, 10–80 % ~18–20 min | Around 550,000+ SEK for RWD; AWD examples around 640–650,000 SEK | 1,600 kg towing + ultra-fast charging + good comfort, often with attractive leasing deals. |
| Kia EV6 Long Range AWD | 1,800 kg | About 546–580 km WLTP depending on version | 800-V, 10–80 % ~18 min in tests | List around 710,000 SEK for GT Line AWD LR, but strong campaigns can bring it down near 580,000 SEK | Probably the best balance of price, 800-V, range and 1,800 kg towing in the mid-size class. |
| Škoda Enyaq 85x | 1,200 kg | Up to ~571 km WLTP | 10–80 % in roughly 28 min, max ~135–175 kW (version-dependent) | From ~583,000 SEK; 85x Sportline closer to 670,000 SEK | Not a towing champion in kg, but very spacious, quiet and efficient – great family tow car for lighter caravans / horse trailers. |
| Kia EV9 (RWD / AWD) | 2,500 kg (all versions) | Around 500+ km WLTP (long-range battery) | 800-V, roughly 10–80 % ~25 min | From 689,900 SEK (RWD Standard Range), AWD from 819,900 SEK | If you really need 2,500 kg towing, EV9 is an absolute value winner versus big premium SUVs with similar towing capacity. |
(All prices are approximate and vary by country, equipment, incentives and dealer campaigns.)
How I’d think about it – by use case
1. “Normal” Nordic caravan (1,300–1,600 kg total weight)
Here Tesla Model Y and Hyundai Ioniq 5 / Kia EV6 are the real “bang-for-the-buck” heroes.
Tesla Model Y
- 1,600 kg towing, ~568 km WLTP (Long Range), very efficient.
- Supercharger network makes long-distance towing much easier, especially in Norway/Sweden/Finland.
- Purchase price is lower than many rivals that tow less and have worse range → overall, a lot of tow car per euro/SEK if you like Tesla’s ecosystem.
Hyundai Ioniq 5 Long Range AWD
- Also 1,600 kg towing, 800-V system, very fast charging, comfortable family crossover.
- Often very strong leasing offers in the Nordics → total monthly cost can beat Tesla even if list price is similar.
Kia EV6 Long Range AWD
- For those who want 1,800 kg towing in the same general size class.
- If your caravan is around 1,700 kg, or you have a heavier boat/trailer just over 1.6 tons, EV6 is often the best compromise of price, range and towing in Europe.
👉 Recommendation:
- Up to 1,600 kg → compare Model Y vs Ioniq 5 (and EV6 if you find a good deal).
- 1,600–1,800 kg → EV6 AWD is the sweet spot in the mid-size segment.
2. You really need maximum towing (2.0–2.5 tons)
Then things get expensive quickly – but Kia EV9 stands out:
- 2,500 kg braked trailer load – best among EU-market passenger BEVs right now.
- Seven seats, 800-V, strong DC charging and starting price under 700k SEK for the base RWD in Sweden.
Compared to e.g. Mercedes EQS SUV / Audi Q8 e-tron / Tesla Model X, you get similar or better towing capacity for clearly less money, so EV9 is the “bang-for-the-buck” winner among heavy-duty tow EVs – as long as you’re OK with a big SUV.
3. You prioritise space & comfort with medium towing
- Škoda Enyaq 85x is very attractive if:
- You’re fine with 1,200 kg towing (smaller caravan, horse trailer, boat).
- You want a quiet cabin, big boot, long WLTP range and decent charging.
It’s not “the best” on any single spec, but when you add space + comfort + price, it becomes a very sensible tow car if your trailer is lighter.
4. How much range do you get while towing?
Rule of thumb for these EVs:
- Expect about 50–60% of WLTP range when towing a high caravan at 90–100 km/h.
- Example: Model Y LR (568 km WLTP) → typically ~250–300 km per charge with a normal caravan at Nordic motorway speeds.
- Ioniq 5 / EV6 with 800-V let you “charge short and often” and still keep a good average speed on long trips.
Final shortlist (value for money, towing in Nordics/Europe)
- 1.0–1.3 tons trailer/caravan → Škoda Enyaq 85/85x if you care about space & comfort.
- 1.3–1.6 tons →
- Best overall value: Tesla Model Y (RWD / Premium / LR)
- Comfort + ultra-fast 800-V charging: Hyundai Ioniq 5 LR AWD
- 1.6–1.8 tons → Kia EV6 Long Range AWD
- Up to 2.5 tons → Kia EV9
Added models: BMW Neue Klasse iX3 & Mercedes electric GLC (GLC with EQ Technology)
BMW iX3 50 xDrive (Neue Klasse)
- Max towing (braked): 2,000 kg with optional electric tow bar (bmw.co.uk)
- WLTP range: up to 805 km (huge) (bmw.se)
- Charging:
- 800 V architecture
- Up to 400 kW DC, 10–80% ~21 min, ~309–372 km added in 10 min at HPC (electrive.com)
- Price (Europe / Nordics):
- BMW Sweden: from 749,900 SEK (bmw.se)
- Electrive mentions ~€68,900 in Europe (electrive.com)
Where it fits in your “bang for the buck towing” list:
- Tow side: 2,000 kg puts it above Model Y / Ioniq 5 / EV6 (1,600–1,800 kg) and Enyaq (1,200 kg), but below EV9 (2,500 kg) and roughly in EX90/Polestar 3 territory.
- Tech/range: insane combo of 805 km WLTP + 400 kW DC → one of the strongest long-distance/towing packages on paper.
- Value: price is clearly premium vs Model Y / Ioniq 5 / EV6. So:
- Not “cheap kg/SEK”,
- but very strong if you want 2,000 kg + max range + ultra-fast charging in a BMW package.
I’d place it as a “premium value” tow EV: not best on pure price, but excellent when you weigh 2,000 kg towing + 800V + 805 km WLTP.
Mercedes GLC EV (GLC with EQ Technology)
- Max towing (braked): 2,400 kg (drawbar load 100 kg) with tow hitch (electrive.com)
- WLTP range: up to ~713 km with 94 kWh battery (Electra)
- Charging:
- 800 V architecture
- Peak ~330 kW DC, 10–80% ≈ 22–24 min, up to ~260–300 km in 10 min according to Mercedes (MotorHub)
- Price (expected):
- Several sources: positioned around €70,000 in Europe; official Nordic prices not yet published (Electra)
Where it fits in the list:
- Tow side: 2,400 kg = just below EV9 (2,500 kg) and above iX3 (2,000 kg), EX90/Polestar 3 (2,200 kg).
- Tech/range: 713 km WLTP + 330 kW DC = slightly less range than iX3, but still top tier.
- Value: likely more expensive than iX3 / EV9 entry trims once Swedish pricing lands, but you get high-end Mercedes interior, Hyperscreen and comfort tech.
So in simple towing/value terms:
- Pure kg per SEK/€ (heavy class):
- Kia EV9 still looks like the best “value” heavy tow EV (2,500 kg at relatively low price for that class). (Dardoor)
- “Premium heavy tow, still reasonable value”:
- Mercedes GLC EV (2,400 kg, ~713 km WLTP)
- BMW iX3 Neue Klasse (2,000 kg, 805 km WLTP, 400 kW DC)
Updated mental ranking for towing + value (Nordics/Europe)
Mid-class value tow EVs (up to ~1.8 t):
- Tesla Model Y (1,600 kg)
- Hyundai Ioniq 5 LR AWD (1,600 kg)
- Kia EV6 LR AWD (1,800 kg)
Upper / heavy class:
- Kia EV9 – 2,500 kg, best kg/SEK if you really need max tow
- Mercedes GLC EV – 2,400 kg, 713 km WLTP, premium comfort
- BMW iX3 Neue Klasse – 2,000 kg, 805 km WLTP, 400 kW DC, premium but a bit cheaper than GLC EV (likely)
