EV with Range Extender (EREV)

Big picture

Right now there are only a few true range-extender (EREV) cars officially in Europe and the Nordics, plus some BYD DM-i plug-in hybrids that behave very much like range-extenders (electric-first, engine mostly a generator).

Below: Nordic/European-relevant models with WLTP electric range, charging times and approximate prices.

1. Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV

(classic “real” range-extender – always electric drive, rotary as generator)

Concept

  • Wheels are always driven by the electric motor.
  • A 0.83-litre rotary petrol engine drives only a generator and charges the battery when needed.

Tech & range

  • Battery: 17.8 kWh
  • WLTP electric range: ≈ 85 km
  • Total range (electric + petrol): 600+ km (Mazda quotes around 370+ miles).

Charging

  • AC: 7.2–11 kW onboard
    • 0–100 % in about 1.5–1.75 h at 11 kW wallbox.
  • DC: up to about 36–50 kW (CCS)
    • 20/10–80 % in roughly 25 minutes.

Price & availability

  • Sweden: list price around 415 000 SEK, but campaigns down to ≈ 300–385 000 SEK depending on trim.
  • UK: top Edition R about £37,950, lower trims from ≈ £31,250.
  • Roughly €32–38,000 in mainland Europe before incentives.
  • Sold in Nordics (SE/NO) and most of Europe.

Takeaway:
This is the purest EREV you can actually buy in the Nordics today – it really behaves like an EV with a petrol “powerbank” onboard.

2. Leapmotor C10 REEV

(mid-size SUV, Stellantis + Leapmotor – new to EU)

Concept

  • Chinese REEV SUV: a 1.5-litre petrol engine works as a range-extender, the electric motor drives the wheels.

Tech & range (EU-spec REEV)

  • Battery: 28.4 kWh
  • Electric range: about 140 km (European tests, WLTP-class figures).
  • Total range: up to around 974 km.

Charging (numbers are mostly reasonable estimates based on battery size + typical specs)

  • AC: about 6.6–7 kW
    • 0–100 % in roughly 4–5 h.
  • DC: around 60–70 kW
    • 10–80 % in ~20–30 min.

(For exact AC/DC specs I’d double-check local brochures once the Nordic spec is fully published.)

Price & availability

  • Germany: from about €37,600 for the REEV.
  • That points to ~420–450 000 SEK when/if it hits Sweden (before discounts).
  • Launched in Europe in 2025 (e.g. Spain, other Stellantis markets); Nordic introduction expected but not fully rolled out yet.

Takeaway:
Once it arrives in the Nordics, this will be the long-electric-range family EREV – ~140 km on battery is a lot.

3. BYD SEAL U DM-i

(SUV, electric-first PHEV – engine mostly behaves like a range-extender)

BYD’s DM-i system is technically a PHEV, but it is electric-first and the petrol engine often mainly feeds a generator. In daily use, it feels very similar to a modern range-extender, especially if you charge often.

Tech & range (EU-spec)

  • Batteries:
    • Boost/Design: 18.3 kWh
    • Comfort: 26.6 kWh
  • WLTP electric range:
    • 18.3 kWh: ≈ 80 km
    • 26.6 kWh: up to ≈ 125 km
  • Total WLTP range: up to ≈ 1,080 km.

Charging

  • AC: 11 kW 3-phase
    • 0–100 % in roughly 2–2.5 h depending on battery size.
  • DC:
    • Up to ≈ 80–85 kW DC, with 10–80 % in about 30 min for DM-i cars (varies slightly by source).

Price & availability

  • Ireland example: Comfort 26.6 kWh around €44,000, Design AWD above €52,000.
  • Early EU tests mention entry pricing from around €42,000.
  • Rough Swedish equivalent: ≈ 470–600 000 SEK depending on version.
  • On sale in several EU countries; BYD is strong in the Nordics but DM-i versions are arriving first in Western/Southern Europe – Nordic pricing/ETA needs to be checked with local BYD dealers.

Takeaway:
If you want a family SUV with very long total range and a lot of electric range, the 26.6 kWh version (≈125 km WLTP electric) is the interesting one.

4. BYD SEAL 6 DM-i (Saloon & Touring)

(D-segment sedan/estate – “anti-diesel” with 100+ km electric)

Tech & range

  • Batteries (EU): 10.1 kWh or 19.0 kWh Blade LFP.
  • WLTP electric range (big battery):
    • EU data: ≈ 100–105 km, depending on saloon vs Touring.
  • Total range:
    • Up to around 1,500 km combined in some markets.

Charging

  • AC: typically 11 kW 3-phase (same DM-i platform approach).
  • DC: dealers in Spain mention fast-charging to 80 % in ~30 min, which implies roughly 50–80 kW DC, given the battery size.

Price & availability

  • Spain: list prices from about
    • ≈ €37,000 (Boost, small battery)
    • ≈ €42,000 (Comfort Lite, 19 kWh)
    • After local grants, effective prices can go down to ≈ €31–34,000.
  • Roughly 450–550 000 SEK if/when it comes to Sweden.
  • Launched in Spain in 2025, EU rollout planned; Touring shown at IAA Munich.
  • Nordics likely from 2026+.

Takeaway:
Think Passat/Superb-class company car but with 100 km electric instead of diesel.

5. BYD ATTO 2 DM-i

(small B-segment SUV – formally PHEV, but engine mostly a generator)

Tech & range

  • Batteries (PHEV versions):
    • Active: 7.8 kWh, electric range ≈ 40 km WLTP, total ≈ 930 km WLTP.
    • Boost: 18 kWh, electric range ≈ 90 km WLTP, total up to ≈ 1,000 km WLTP.
  • DM-i logic: 1.5-litre petrol engine works a lot as a generator, the car tries to stay in electric drive as much as possible and uses the engine more at higher speeds or low SOC.

Charging

  • AC: (no practical DC for the PHEV)
    • Active: 3.3 kW
    • Boost: 6.6 kW
    • 15–100 % in roughly 3 h for the Boost model.
  • DC: effectively no DC fast-charging – you charge at home/work like a normal PHEV.

Price & availability

  • Germany: Atto 2 DM-i Active from €35,990, Boost from €38,990.
  • Roughly 400–430 000 SEK depending on trim.
  • Europe debut 2025, with broader EU deliveries from 2026 (including UK); Nordics likely somewhat later.

Takeaway:
If you want a small SUV but still 80–90 km electric plus “range-extender-feel”, this is very unusual – most B-SUV PHEVs are 40–60 km electric.
